Guiding the sporting agenda

The Youth Sport Trust and Sport England recently met with Girlguiding UK to develop a formal relationship to support sport through alternative methods.
Did you know?
- Girlguiding UK is the largest youth organisation for girls in the UK today with 600,000 girls attending guiding groups (with a further 50,000 on a waiting list)
- 40% of guide groups meet on school sites
- Around 30 per cent of eight-year-old girls are in Brownies
- There are four groups within Girlguiding UK: Rainbows (5-7 year olds), Brownies (7-10 year olds), Guides (10-14 year olds) and Seniors (14-26 year olds).
Projects that have been delivered through School Sport Partnerships and the Guides over the last two years include:
- Sainsbury’s Top Activity: Bramcote School Sport Partnership worked with Brownie packs from across the area, delivering Sainsbury’s TOP Activity national tutor training. The Brownie leaders implemented the Sainsbury’s TOP Activity training during their weekly Brownie meetings and holiday programmes, delivering games and activities. Participants were able to plan and lead their own games, providing Brownie packs with a wide range of new ideas, equipment and activities.
- Off the Couch: Girlguiding Midlands ‘Stepped into Sport’ with the help of Sports Leaders UK and Youth Sport Trust for what has been a two-year project. A group of young adults were trained through the Community Sports Leaders Award to help them run a demonstration Sports Festival over a residential weekend. The Festival was made up of 114 girls 10-16 years of age from across Girlguiding Midlands who experienced a wide range of sporting activities supported by professional coaches and assisted by the 24 who undertook CSLA.
We hope that this new relationship with GirlGuiding UK will support girls who are interested in gaining access to sporting opportunities and also support links to our Step into Sport programme. Along with Sport England, we hope to formalise links with other uniformed groups over the next year so look out for more news.
