Golden girl supports Young Ambassador Conferences

Thursday, 2 October 2008

Rebecca Romero with Ali OliverOlympic sensation Rebecca Romero is today in Derby to support our Young Ambassador Conference.

Rebecca who is 28 won cycling gold in Beijing and rowing silver in Athens four years ago, becoming the first British woman to win medals in two different summer Olympic sports.

In Derby she will be joined by around 140 Young Ambassadors, many of whom will be local to the area, and a host of Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The Young Ambassadors will spend the day planning for their two-year role.

This is one of six Young Ambassador Conferences taking place across the country, the others being in York, Oxford, Manchester, Exeter and London. This academic year we have 1000 Young Ambassadors. On Tuesday 30 September Rebecca attended the Young Ambassador Conference in Manchester.

Each Young Ambassador has been specially selected by the 450 School Sport Partnerships in England, either because of their strong sporting talent or through their commitment to sports leadership and volunteering

Our Young Ambassador programme will see more than 5,500 14-19 year olds working as role models in schools and local communities in the run up to 2012.

The programme, now in its third year, has received official recognition from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through its London 2012 Inspire Mark.

Each Young Ambassador will help build on the excitement created by the 2012 Games by championing the Olympic and Paralympic values, sport, PE and a healthy lifestyle to other youngsters.

Launched in 2006, the Young Ambassador programme is managed by the Youth Sport Trust on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
