Our core work

Rounders gameOur core work can be divided into a number of key areas:

1. Raising the standards of PE and school sport

We help schools to gain Specialist Sports Status. These Sports Colleges are at the hub of the government’s strategy to enhance young people’s opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports. Our support continues after the schools have become Sports Colleges and we produce a range of programmes and resources to help them raise standards of teaching and learning.

There are now over 400 schools that have been designated as Specialist Sports Colleges in England. This means that 1 in 8 secondary schools now use the power of sport to improve the attainment and achievement of young people.

2. Improving educational standards through sport

We assist Sports Colleges and Academies to use PE and sport to help young people to learn more. We look at new and exciting ways to use PE and sport to raise achievement in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science and also are working to improve the uptake of languages.

3. Getting more young people involved in sport

The Youth Sport Trust collaborates with a range of national governing bodies of sport, corporate partners, trusts and foundations and government departments to create programmes that give more young people the chance to take part in sport.

In partnership we deliver the following programmes: TOP Activity with Sainsbury’s, Sky Living For Sport with BSkyB and GirlsActive with Norwich Union. All three seek to increase participation in sport by young people.

4. Creating opportunities for young leaders and volunteers

There are many different ways for young people to get involved in sport. Our work in leadership and volunteering creates opportunities for 14 to 19 year olds to become sport leaders, coaches and volunteers. This helps young people to develop their confidence, self-esteem and communication skills.

5. Supporting sporting talent in young people

For those young people who show real sporting promise, we help them to achieve their potential. We create opportunities for gifted and talented young athletes to develop their skills and help to support their relationships with school, family and coaches from the national governing bodies of sport.

6. A global sporting community

To inspire worldwide sporting and cross-cultural links between schools, we run a project called Dreams + Teams in partnership with the British Council. So far, we have created global links between schools, teachers and students from 250 schools and 44 countries.
