Study Support / out-of-school hours learning (oshl)
ContinYou logoThe Youth Sport Trust works with ContinYou - an organisation that uses learning to tackle inequality and build social inclusion - to support schools with the implementation, development & sustainability of study support programmes.

As defined by the DfEE (1999) study support, more commonly known as out of school hours learning (oshl) is: ‘learning activity outside normal lessons which young people take part in voluntarily. Study Support is, accordingly, an inclusive term, embracing many activities with many different names and guises. Its purpose is to improve young people’s motivation, build their self esteem and help them to become effective learners. Above all it aims to raise achievement.’

Study support not only provides a means to the delivery of the government's PE & Sport PSA target for 2008. It forms part of the extended services core offer and is a vital tool for the delivery of various agendas including Every Child Matters, Youth Matters, Raising Standards & Personalised Learning, amongst others.

PE  and sport has always played an integral part of a school’s study support provision and has significantly developed from the delivery of traditional team sports into opportunities to participate in non-traditional activities such as cheer leading, kite flying and skate boarding.

Big Lottery Fund logoThe work of School Sports Partnerships to develop study support has been significantly enhanced in this respect by the Big Lottery Fund. They have provided grants to run targeted study support activities for young people who are most disadvantaged, disaffected or for those who currently do not participate in PE & Sport.

If you are working within a Sports College or School Sport Partnership please visit the oshl pages in the Sports Colleges area on the School Sport Xchange.
